Bluff Mountain in Lexington, Virginia

5 Lesser-Known Shenandoah Valley Hikes

The Shenandoah Valley is home to hundreds of miles of trails, but some of the best hikes rarely make the "must-do" lists.

If you're looking to skip the crowds, start with these five hidden gems.

🥾 Bluff Mountain (Lexington)

This 4.3-mile out-and-back includes a stretch of the Appalachian Trail, the historic Punchbowl Shelter, the remains of a former fire tower, and expansive Blue Ridge views.

🥾 Copernicus Ridge (Edinburg)

This short 2.6-mile out-and-back climbs to four overlooks with sweeping views of Fort Valley and the surrounding mountains. It's a quick hike with surprisingly big rewards.

🥾 Emerald Pond (New Market)

This 8.4-mile hike leads to a secluded spring-fed pond, with rock scrambles and a scenic overlook along the way. It's especially refreshing on a warm summer day.

🥾 Hidden Rocks (Dayton)

This 2.7-mile out-and-back features massive boulders, stream crossings, rhododendron tunnels, and small waterfalls. It's a fun, family-friendly hike with lots to explore.

🥾 Sulphur Springs Gap (Maurertown)

This 7.0-mile loop packs in waterfalls, rock scrambles, primitive campsites, and valley views. It's one of the area’s most rewarding under-the-radar hikes.
